Reiki for Chicago Firefighters, Paramedics, and EMTs

The Chicago Fire Dept. called us after suffering several Line of Duty Deaths to help support their members dealing with grief and other emotions related to the realities of their important job. We were honored to help these firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs let go of energetically stored trauma, which sometimes manifests as physical pain.

Reiki sometimes helps when all else has failed, because Western medicine does not yet consider energetic disturbance to be a contributing factor for pain.

Jermaine Pelt gave his life serving our city. This tragic loss is a reminder of the brave dedication of our first responders, and the risks they take to help keep us safe.

With four volunteers, Jana, Ebony, and Barb, who got up around 4am to travel to the south side, we were able to offer Reiki sessions to 22 members of the E115 team.

As is always the case when introducing something new, we had several very skeptical recipients sit down in our chairs. One younger gentleman seemed annoyed that he’d been encouraged to participate. Ten minutes later his shoulders had dropped, his face was peaceful and he said, “I feel SO relaxed.”

“Are you suprised?” I asked.

“Yes!” was his response.

This is very typical of a first-time event with any population. Shifting the paradigm takes time and perseverance. Huge thanks to the volunteers who remain positive and enthusiastic under any manner of circumstances.

And later our contact shared this text she’d received from a paramedic later that night.

I’ve often wondered what exchanges have taken place outside of our earshot, which may be more authentic, or have the benefit of time.
